College Football Picks: Week 10

This entire week revolves around LSU vs. Alabama.  #1 vs. #2 is pretty rare.  By my calculations, we’ve only seen a regular season match-up between #1 and #2 three times in the last 15 years.  Sure, there’s going to be other games on.  And sure, there are more important things than football going on in the world right now.  But to me, this game is what life sports fandom is all about.  I’m gambling just to help the time move a little bit faster until 8 pm on Saturday.  All lines courtesy of

Virginia at Maryland:  Things really couldn’t be going much worse for the Terps.  Suspensions, injuries, players not living up to expectations, and questionable coaching.  Virginia, on the other hand, seems to be a program on the rise.  They aren’t great this season, but they’re clearly improving under second year coach Mike London.  Maryland is really in disarray; the fans (and more importantly, the players) are giving up Randy Edsall.  That doesn’t bode well for their games the rest of the way.  Virginia -2.

Texas A&M at Oklahoma:  Texas A&M dropped out of the rankings after their loss to Missouri last week and they are getting no love from the handicappers.  Granted, Oklahoma is a very good team and they know that they likely need to win out to have a shot at the Big 12 title.  If I were picking straight-up I’d take the Sooners, but I think the Aggies will keep this closer than Vegas thinks.  Texas A&M +13.5.

Purdue at Wisconsin:  What a rough two weeks for Wisconsin.  They were national title contenders, and then they lose via closing minute hail mary passes in consecutive weeks.  They’ll bounce back against a bad Purdue team this week, but they are giving way too many points here.  Just like the previous pick, I think the underdog will keep it a little closer than the line.  Purdue +25.5.

South Carolina at Arkansas: Most people outside of Arkansas had been saying they thought Arkansas seemed to be fraudulently climbing up the rankings.  In the last two weeks they narrowly escaped on the road at Mississippi and Vanderbilt, two teams that are mediocre at best.  I think South Carolina is overrated too, but I think they truly expose Arkansas this week.  Take South Carolina +5, and consider taking the ‘Cocks to win too.

Louisiana State at Alabama:  Screw the Rose Bowl, this is the Granddaddy of them all.  It has everything you love about college football.  Both teams have very stout defenses, so this one could come down to which team can make a big play to break the stalemate.  LSU’s defense seems to get more hype, but I think Alabama actually has the better unit.  LSU has plenty of playmakers, but Alabama’s defense is deeper and more experienced.  I think that will tip the scales in favor of the home team.  It’ll be close until the very end, with the Tide pulling away late and setting their sights on the national championship.  Alabama -5.

FREE MONEY LOCK OF THE WEEK:  Kansas State at Oklahoma State:  Taking the over in Oklahoma State games is pretty fun.  Their offense is just unreal to watch, and their defense is just bad enough that the other team is usually able to go on some spurts as well.  Kansas State* got exposed against Oklahoma last week and I don’t think this one will end well for them either.  But they are going to put up some points.  OVER 69.5.

* Interesting footnote:  This is the sixth straight week in which I have picked a Kansas State game.

Last week:  3-3

Season Total:  26-27-1
